Leadership Capacities

Hillary Clinton is motivated by serving this country and providing care to people all over the world. She has accomplished both of these things and led others by example. In this way, she fufills an important moral purpose. She owns her own mistakes and encourages others to be responsible for the actions that they commit and the decisions they make. Her work with the Children's Defense Fund and Veterans Administration spotlights her need to care for the disenfranchised in this country and around the world.

The change process in her life has come with a price. Her willingness to achieve new positions of power have focused intense scrutiny on her personal and professional life. However, she has dominated change in the political arena by both her senate and presidential candidacies. Along the way, she has built amazing relationships with some of the most powerful people in the world and this has enhanced her global credibility and will aid her efforts as Secretary of State. As First Lady, she had a close personal relaionship with Jackie Kennedy Onassis and this friendship highlighted her interest in education and children's issues. This was further evidenced by her appearance in 1995, at the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women, in Beijing, China, where she was invited to discuss, with many international leaders, the U. S. position on women's rights as human rights.

Anyone who watched the confirmation hearings of Hillary Clinton for Secretary of State cannot doubt the wealth of knowledge that she possesses. Her confidence and ability to communicate her views was a credit to everyone who is hoping for peace and prosperity around the world. Her ability to unite people and inspire them to create positive change is supported by her work on national health care and education issues. She practices coherence making every time she gives a speech or supports a program for the silenced voices of women and children around the world. She maintains an energetic lifestyle devoted to her family, career and country. She is a tireless example of committed and caring leadership.

Turning Points

Hillary Rodham Clinton possesses many important qualities of leadership. She is dedicated, determined, creative, influential, and smart. After reading her book, Living History, I am left with the overwhelming sense that she has real vision. She is able to understand the needs of people and how to utilize important resources to effectively help them. She also has a great sense of herself. She understands her strengths and weaknesses through trials and experiences that tested her character.

She has faced numerous turning points in her life. I was especially moved by the death of her father and the scandal that threatened her marriage. To me, these were true tests of her character because they caused her to reflect on everything that she was about and then make decisions that she knew everyone would judge. She also was transformed by the birth of her daughter and elated at her senate win for New York State. Finally, her bid for the presidential nomination will earn her a place in the hearts of many Americans and the history books.

I don't feel that Hillary Clinton has faced failure, so much as she has faced disappointments. Even her bid for the presidency, while I am sure it is perceived as a failure by some, is still a victory for many and she did receive President Obama's nomination for Secretary of State because of her position in that election race. Other scandals that she endured, like Whitewater and the Impeachment Process of President Clinton, served to strengthen her resolve and promote her need to do more for others. It is this idea of caring for people that permeates the chapters of her book as you turn the pages reliving that history from such a personal perspective. I can't wait to see what happens next.

Family, Work and Service

Hillary Rodham Clinton remarked during the 1992 presidential campaign for her husband that most people are looking for the right balance in life and for her that balance is family, work and service. I am sure that her ability to achieve that balance has been tested over the years as she presided as First Lady, was elected as the first woman Senator for New York State, and ran for President in 2008. In these roles, she continued to cast a spotlight on women's issues all over the world as well as be a staunch advocate for health care reform. In addition to these causes, she found time to write a book, It Takes A Village and Other Lessons Children Teach Us. Even now, as she prepares to assume the role of Secretary of State for the Obama Administration, she is committed to her family, work and service to our country.

She was born in Park Ridge, Illinois, and attended Wellesley College and Yale Law School. She married Bill Clinton in 1975 and they had their daughter Chelsea in 1980. She presided as the First Lady of Arkansas for 12 years while her husband was governor. As First Lady of the United States, she received her share of controversy when she was appointed to chair the Task Force on National Health Care Reform. Over the years, she has been committed to causes like the Children's Defense Fund and Veterans Affairs.

I selected her for my leadership blog because I admire her greatly and hope that one day she will become President of the United States. I identify with her values and I believe that in every decision she makes, she does what is best for this country. I don't think that she has had an easy life because she has had to deal with some humiliating experiences in the public eye. But in every case, she has conducted herself with grace, professionalism, and determination. She has proven that she is smart, courageous, and can handle herself with the most powerful leaders in the world.
